Seminar on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day held at Central University of Punjab
Bathinda : On the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Central University of Punjab, under the patronage of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, organized a seminar to mark Partition Horrors Remembrance Day. The keynote speaker for this programme was Prof. Manu Sharma, Panjab University, Chandigarh.
In his keynote address, Prof. Manu Sharma stated that the British East India Company came to India for trading purposes as British people were attracted by the wealth of Indians at that time. The revolt of 1857, which was fought unanimously by people of all religions together, shook the British empires. It strengthened their divide and rule policy in India. He further stated that the independence movement by our freedom fighters has given us freedom, but when the British people left India in 1947, the country was partitioned into two independent states. He highlighted that the partition was painful as the people of our country foresaw intense violence and population transfer during that time. More than 1 Crore people were displaced and lakhs lost their lives during partition.
Prof. Raghavendra P. Tiwari, the Vice-Chancellor, remembered the horrors of the catastrophic Partition. He mentioned that the partition of India devastated millions of lives in our country. The repercussions of and trauma due to partition are felt and experienced till date. He urged youngsters to understand their duty towards the nation, maintain social harmony and live unitedly as our freedom comes as a result of the sacrifice of life by millions of people.
The eminent dignitaries who attended this program were Prof. B.P. Garg, Controller of Examinations and Registrar (O) and Prof. Vinod Kumar Grag, Dean Student Welfare. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Hareet Kumar Meena, HoD, Dept. of History and Dr. Bali Bahadur, HoD, Dept. of Sociology. Faculty, research scholars and students from different departments of the university attended this program.
