Billabong High International School students dedicate this Children’s Day to social empowerment
Mumbai: More than 500+ students from Kangaroo Kids Education Ltd. owned Billabong High International School (BHIS) today dedicated the Children’s Day celebrations towards driving a positive social change. Students from four BHIS centres, namely Malad and Santacruz in Mumbai, Pune, and Baroda held three novel initiatives – each involving donating time and resources towards betterment of underprivileged citizens.
BHIS Malad and Santacruz students from grades 8-10 undertook a crowd funding initiative to support Nargis Dutt Foundation – an eminent NGO. The proceeds from the same were donated to fund the objectives of the NGO – namely in meeting health and education needs of the underprivileged, financially backward and tribal communities. As a small reward to the immense efforts, BHIS would sponsor a bib to participate and run in the upcoming Tata Mumbai Marathon for each student raising more than Rs 20,000.
Besides, the program would span for the entire year, with the BHIS students from Malad and Santacruz, set to play a deeper role in empowering village children. The students will not only create a curriculum for the schools in the village; but also, all of them will visit these schools ‘grade-wise’– taking turns to educate the village children every month – over a year.
BHIS Pune students spent the day with children from Dharmaveer Shambhu Raje Ashram. 30 children from the Ashram were invited to BHIS Pune for being a part of the School’s Children’s Day celebrations. More than 160 children from BHIS and KKEL participated to make the event a memorable experience. BHIS and KKEL children also collected some stationery items to gift to these children. Besides, Grade 5 children of BHIS also conducted class assembly around the theme “Children as Future-responsible Citizens” – sharing their views on the role children would have in transforming the future of the country and the world.
Another important project rolled out was ‘Reduction of plastic footprint’ where the children will be collecting plastic throughout the year and then hand over the same to Rudra Environment Solutions to convert plastic to oil.
BHIS Vadodara students celebrated Children’s Day organising a knowledge sharing and celebration session for the local Anganwadi children as well as specially-abled children. 30 students from the school visited and spent a day at an Anganwadi in Kalali, Vadodara. They organised fun sessions involving sandwich making and serving, games, and storytelling through puppets for all Anganwadi children. Besides, another 27 students from BHIS spent a day at Arpan Foundation – an NGO working with the differently-abled children. The students presented a skit and dance performance for the kids and also conducted a session to teach them. The students also pledged to visit Arpan Foundation as an ongoing activity – to conduct engaging sessions such as dance and play as well as to conduct activities such as making friendship bands and tying the band to their friends.
The school student body will continue to organise various such events to keep giving back to society.
Lauding the initiative by the students, KVS Seshasai, CEO, Kangaroo Kids Education Ltd., said, “At BHIS, we are ardent believers that it takes small initiatives and consistent efforts to make a substantial impact. We are humbled and elated at the same time, by the initiatives undertaken by our students on the occasion of Children’s Day. The tenets of empathy, goodness and social values instilled through our neuroscience based curriculum are visible with the initiatives led by our children on a regular basis. I congratulate the unsung heroes behind these initiatives – our teachers and parents who have lent their unconditional support”
