University of São Paulo: Italian pianist exhibits Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata” at USP

OItalian musician and musicologist Luca Chiantore will perform this Tuesday, the 23rd, at 12:30 pm, at the Sala Villa-Lobos of the Biblioteca Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin (BBM) at USP. The repertoire includes studies by the French pianist Hélène de Nerve de Montgeroult (1764-1836) and the Moonlight Sonata (Opus 27, number 2), by the German composer Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). Free of charge, the concert is part of the USP International Music Series , an initiative of the Dean of Culture and University Extension at USP and the School of Communications and Arts (ECA), also at USP.
Luca Chiantore is a professor at the Department of Musicology at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya, at the Escola Superior de Música Reina Sofia – both in Spain – and at the Doctoral Program at the University of Aveiro, in Portugal. Since 2003 its activities are coordinated by Musikeon, a musicological services and specialized musical training company.
Doctor in Musicology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, ​​Chiantore has given courses, conferences and masterclasses in more than 150 universities and institutions around the world and, as a pianist, has given recitals in famous venues such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Teatro Colón , in Buenos Aires, the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), the Palace of Fine Arts in Mexico City and Padma Legian’s Grand Ballroom in Denpasar, Bali. Chiantore has focused his research work on the piano repertoire of the 19th century and on the transformations of interpretive paradigms in European classical music from the 18th century to the present. He is the author of works such as History of Pianistic Technique , Beethoven at the Piano and Writing about Music .(in partnership with Áurea Domínguez and Sílvia Martínez).

With pianist and composer David Ortolà, Chiantore founded the Tropos Ensemble, an experimental creation group with which he regularly performs international concerts. In November 2018, he presented the artistic research project inVersions , which has occupied him since then in an extensive program of concerts for solo piano and with orchestra, conference-concerts and unconventional recordings of the classical repertoire in several countries.

The USP International Music Series (SIM-USP) was conceived in 2019. The concerts are supported by embassies, consulates and cultural institutes, with the pianist Eduardo Monteiro and the clarinetist Mônica Lucas, both professors at the Department of Music at ECA.

The series is distinguished by combining academic research and artistic work: the concerts are accompanied by introductory mini-lectures and masterclasses for students from the city’s universities and music schools. The program includes renowned international artists consolidated on the world stage, playing in partnership with expressive Brazilian musicians.
