AMU celebrates Constitution Day
Aligarh: Different faculties, departments, schools and offices of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) joined the nation-wide celebrations to observe the Samvidhan Divas (Constitution Day).
The function at the Department of Plant Protection started with the reading out of Preamble of Constitution by AMU Pro Vice Chancellor, Prof Akhtar Haseeb, which was joined by large number of students, teachers and non-teaching staff. He also administered a pledge vowing to discharge constitutional responsibilities.
“India’s Constitution remains a major inspiration for good governance and leadership,” said Prof Haseeb reminding everyone of duties, laid down for every citizen of India, which act as framework for responsibilities towards the Nation.
Dr R U Khan coordinated the programme.
Inaugurating the celebrations at the Department of Law, Prof M Shakeel Ahmad Samdani, Dean, Faculty of Law spoke on the fundamental rights and duties enshrined in the Constitution. He said that Indian Constitution, which is one of the best in the world and has withstood the test of time.
Prof Javaid Talib, Chairman, Department of Law administered the pledge on the Preamble of the Constitution to students and faculty members. Prof Badar Ahmad extended the vote of thanks. In addition, there were debates and essay competitions on Constitution of India.
At the Department of Commerce, Professor Nawab Ali Khan (Chairman) administered the oath on preamble and fundamental duties of the Constitution to students, teaching and non-teaching staff. The Department also organised a debate competition on the topic, ‘Right to Equality is the essence of the Indian Constitution’; a quiz on ‘Constitution of India’ and an essay writing competition on ‘Relevance of Constitution’. Dr Naghma Azhar and Dr Mohd Nayyer Rahman helped organising and coordinating the programme.
Students participated in debate and essay writing competitions to mark the occasion at the Department of Strategic and Security Studies. Dr M Aftab Alam, the guest-speaker from the Department of Political Science delineated importance of upholding the idea of constitutionalism. Dr Syed Tahseen Raza and Dr Swasti Rao coordinated the event.
Likewise, the Constitution Day was also celebrated at the Centre for Distance Education (CDE). After reading the Preamble of the Constitution to faculty members, non-teaching staff and students; Prof M Nafees Ahmad Ansari, Director of CDE urged students to be aware of the postulates of the Constitution and to strive for becoming informed citizens making valuable contributions. An essay writing competition was also organised on the occasion. The Sayyid Hamid Senior Secondary School-Boys observed the Constitution Day with PGT Teacher, Mr Ghufran Ahmad reading the Preamble to students and staff.
“The Constitution Day was celebrated to make students aware about their rights and duties enshrined in the constitution,” said Mr Syed M Mustafa (Principal).
