RWTH: A Gender Perspective on STEM

The Exploratory Research Space (ERS) at RWTH Aachen University and the GesMINT project will be hosting a Lunch Talk with Professor Tomas Brage from Lund University.


The natural and technical sciences, the so-called STEM subjects, are known to stand for universal validity and objectivity. Gender biases seem to matter less, if they matter at all. So, what does a gender perspective on STEM reveal? Does it need to be considered in every area of research? What are the possibilities and opportunities of a gender-sensitive approach in the sciences?

The ERS Lunch Talk “Gender Perspective on STEM – Always There, Sometimes Forgotten” with Professor Tomas Brage from Lund University in Sweden will address these questions on September 28, 2022, at 11am in the HS2 Lecture Hall, PPS Building, Professor-Pirlet-Straße 12. Brage will provide an overview of what the gender dimension has to do with STEM research, argue why it should not be neglected, and analyze what effects a consideration of gender aspects will have on the quality of STEM research and knowledge production.

Tomas Brage is a professor of physics in the Division of Mathematical Physics at Lund University in Sweden. Over the past 15 years, he has worked extensively on gender equality in the sciences, particularly in physics and mathematics. He gives lectures throughout Europe on the topic of Gender and Physics and is active in several European networks. He is a member of the steering group of the gender working group of the Leading European Research Universities (LERU) network, the genderSTE COST network, and the GENERA Horizon 2020 project.
