University of São Paulo: USP is the best Brazilian university in Latin America
USP is the best Brazilian university, according to the QS Latin America Ranking published today, September 22, by the British organization Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). This 12th edition of the ranking evaluated and classified 428 institutions in Latin America. The Pontifical Catholic University of Chile leads the list.
Of the total of 98 ranked Brazilian universities, 13 are among the 50 best in the region. In addition to USP, the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) was in 5th place; the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in the 8th; and the Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho (Unesp), at the 11th.
USP obtained an average of 99.8 points, out of a total of 100 points, and was in the lead in four of the eight indicators evaluated: number of professors with a doctorate, publications per faculty, international research network and impact on the internet.

USP also won prominent positions in other rankings released by QS this year. In the world ranking, USP is the best Brazilian institution, ranked 115th.
In the QS World University Rankings by Subject, the University stood out in 11 areas, in which it was ranked among the top 50: Dentistry (11th position); Mining and Ore Engineering (31st); Petroleum Engineering (32nd); Geography (38th); Modern Languages (41st); Veterinary Science (41st); Anthropology (42nd); Architecture (44th); Agriculture and Forestry (48th); Sports Science (49th), being the only Brazilian to appear on this list; and Sociology (49th).
In 25 specific areas, USP ranked between 51st and 100th; in five areas, among the top 150; and, in three areas, among the top 200.
Specific areas are grouped into five major areas and USP is among the top 100 in the overall ranking of all five: Life Sciences and Medicine (61st), Arts and Humanities (68th), Social Sciences and Administration (74th), Science Natural (77th) and Engineering and Technology (96th).
