Anglia Ruskin University: ARU accredited to educate teachers of the future
Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has successfully applied to become a provider of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) from September 2024, offering more people a first step into a teaching career.
Approval for ARU’s application was granted by the Department of Education and the ITT provision will be regulated by Ofsted. It will allow ARU to build on its existing partnerships with schools across the region, and will be offered at campuses in Chelmsford and Cambridge as well as by ARU Peterborough.
ARU’s School of Education and Social Care is one of the leading providers of Education in the UK, according to The Guardian’s University Guide, and will build on its existing provision to provide undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications to students looking to begin a teaching career.
ARU currently works with SCITT (School-Centred Initial Teacher Training) providers across the region to train hundreds of teachers within schools across the East of England every year. ARU provides the academic Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) qualification, while the trainees achieve their Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with the schools.
ARU will continue and build on these existing partnerships, with school placements being a key element of the new courses.
The new accreditation will allow students to achieve the QTS qualification at ARU as part of their course. Initially, ARU’s focus will be on undergraduate routes, with a longer-term aim to develop postgraduate opportunities for international students.
Dr Kay Aaronricks, Associate Professor and Interim Head of the School of Education and Social Care at ARU, said:
“We are delighted to confirm that Anglia Ruskin University has successfully applied to become a provider of ITT. We believe this accreditation will make ARU one of the largest providers of teacher training in the region.
“The School of Education and Social Care has been actively working to develop support for, and work with educational providers across the region, nationally and internationally. We are at the forefront of excellence in teaching, leading innovation through partnerships and knowledge exchange and supporting evidence-based development through the internationally recognised educational research.
“ARU has an exceptionally strong partnership network that stretches across the Eastern region and we will widen and strengthen these foundations to continue to develop the opportunities available for teacher training in primary and secondary education.”
