University of South Africa: Graduates encouraged to further explore educational trajectories

Addressing the newly minted graduates on 18 October 2022, the Unisa Chancellor and Former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, applauded the students for joining the university’s dynamic alumni who are leading the country, universities and businesses. He conferred degrees and awarded diplomas to graduates on the day.

Held at the ZK Matthews Great Hall, the ceremony was graced by two award-winning South African media personalities, Robert Marawa, who is a sports commentator, and Dr Jerry Mofokeng, an actor who has appeared on several acclaimed films including Tsotsi.

In his congratulatory remarks, Mbeki acknowledged the presence of the two media legends who came to witness the academic accomplishment of Unisa’s students. He further highlighted that the achievements of these graduates means that humanity has gained a new capacity of bringing progress and transformation for the betterment of all.

The ceremony was colourful with a diverse procession from all eight colleges and the graduates who represented their respective fields of study. Graduates from different parts of the continent were excited to share their academic success with their loved ones.

During her welcoming address, Prof Puleng LenkaBula, the Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the university, mentioned that the ceremony invited guests, families and societies to be inspired by the diversity and multiplicity of knowledge systems. LenkaBula stated that Unisa graduates will have a better chance of contributing to the continental and global arena by following lifelong interests of wisdom and knowledge.

Listing illustrious Unisa alumni, which included the Chancellor and other African leaders, LenkaBula continued to share with the graduates that Unisa is one of the finest universities in the world. LenkaBula also explained that education is not an elite’s indulgence, as she reflected on the history of the country recalling the discriminatory education of apartheid with its painful legacies.

LenkaBula shared the current developments of research and the progress Unisa has made in the global rankings. “As Africans we should be proud of our university having been acknowledged for its inventions and innovations in the world,” said LenkaBula. She also enjoined the audience to remember that Unisa is the only university in South Africa that bears the country’s name.

Ultimately, LenkaBula remarked that Unisa paved a way for distance education universities in the world. In 2023, the university will be celebrating its 150th anniversary. Furthermore, LenkaBula noted that the university is doing its best to ensure that students are digitally equipped and well-prepared for the fourth industrial revolution.

Prof Valiant Clapper, the former Executive Dean of the university’s College of Economic and Management Sciences, gave graduates life lessons on integrity and leadership. “Be like gladiators,” he said. “Speak truth to power though the consequences might be harsh.”

The graduation ceremony with its three profound speakers challenged students to look beyond their certificates by pursuing lifelong learning to sustain their future.

I am currently working at Laerskool Laeveld in Mbombela. We travelled all the way from White River, Mpumalanga, to attend the graduation ceremony and what a privilege it has been. Thank you to Unisa and all the people who assisted, inspired, taught and encouraged us throughout the years!

I am excited to have finally finished my degree in education, a profession that teaches other professions. I got exposed to the use of technologies throughout my studies and it feels good to know that I will contribute in building our future graduates.

I would like to thank God for being able to achieve this degree. also, to say thanks to my mother who was my pillar of strength and my brother for supporting me.
