DC Anantnag distributes Implements among Shearing Unit beneficiaries
ANANTNAG : The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Dr Basharat Qayoom today distributed sheep shearing machines, gensets and grinders among various beneficiaries.
A total of 8 shearing units out of the targeted 12 units were established today.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC said that sheep breeding farms are emerging as an important economic activity and several people are using the opportunity for generating livelihood and providing employment to others.
He said that the UT is a net importer of meat and as such there is a lot of scope for expansion of sheep rearing. He said in addition to meat, the wool generated is also in high demand and rearers can fetch good prices in the market.
He said that the district has abundant natural resources including grazing grounds and water supply and has a capacity of bearing many more breeders. He also acknowledged the positive role being played by the Sheep Husbandry department in promoting sheep breeding.
DSHO, Zubair Ahmad Kabli said that the district has a target of setting up 12 sheep shearing units in the present fiscal out of which 8 have been set up. He said that as part of Integrated Sheep Development Scheme, a subsidy of 50% is provided to unit holders for procuring sheep shearing machines, gensets and grinders.
DSHO, beneficiaries, media fraternity, members of the civil society and employees of Sheep Husbandry Department were present on the occasion.
