Professor Sai Gu, Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Steve Dixon, Director of the Centre for Industrial Ultrasonics, were announced as 2022 RAEng Fellows.

Professor Sai Gu is distinguished for his pioneering work in developing a series of innovations, including a new generation of high velocity oxygen fuel thermal spraying technologies, replacing hexavalent chromium plating in critical engineering applications, developing practical pyrolysis routes for bioenergy, and digitalisation of process plants, each of which has improved the competitiveness of British companies.

His work in expanding bioenergy research in Asia and Africa has made a real difference to people’s lives as well as directly addressing the global sustainability challenge.

Professor Steve Dixon is recognised for his internationally pioneering research into techniques for Non-Destructive Testing and ultrasonics, and particularly for application of electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) to industry.

An industry funded RAEng Professorial Fellowship led to him founding the Centre for Industrial Ultrasonics at Warwick University as its Director, focused on delivering solutions to industry. He has worked with numerous companies, especially SMEs, to develop new instrumentation in the area of ultrasonics.

He has also created successful spin-out companies from his research, further optimising impact in multiple international industrial sectors.

Professor Sai Gu said: “I am honoured to become a Fellow of Royal Academy of Engineering. I am fortunate enough to have encountered a number of FREng who have made profound impact on my life.

“These fellows include the late Professor Anthony Evens, who kindly aided me as a postdoc researcher, and Professor Jonathan Seville, whose mentoring, unwavering support and trust gave me to the strengthens to go through the challenges of becoming an academic leader. Those FREng role models will continue to inspire me to improve myself and help young researchers and engineers with dedication and humanity.”

Professor Steve Dixon said, “I’m honoured and delighted to have received the recognition from the Royal Academy of Engineering and my peers within the Academy. I’ve been very lucky to work with many outstanding researchers, technical and support staff, postgraduates and undergraduates, tackling some really interesting and complex measurement problems, working in organisations of all sizes from micro-companies all the way through to large multinationals.

“I know that the award and the weight it carries will help me to continue to do more of the work I love, and will help me to support and encourage others, especially earlier career stage researchers across STEM.”
