Aligarh : Subject experts reflected on the rapid increase in computing power and communication, the availability of computer storage facilities and the age of multimedia applications in the inaugural function of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) sponsored 5th International Conference on ‘Multimedia, Signal Processing and Communication Technologies’ (IMPACT-2022) at the Department of Electronics Engineering, Z H College of Engineering and Technology (ZHCET), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

“Multimedia is practically everywhere and all around us—we can feel its presence in almost all applications ranging from online video databases, IPTV, interactive multimedia and more recently in multimedia based social interaction”, said the Chief Guest, Prof Mohammad Abdul Awal (City University of New York, USA).

He discussed the background of multidimensional signal processing, statistical analysis and modeling, coding and information theory and gave examples of algorithms and design of multimedia signal compression and transmission systems and indexing of multimedia signals.

Presiding over the function, Prof Mirza Salim Beg (Officiating, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology) talked about current multimedia standards and technologies and future technologies.

He provided an understanding of the fundamentals behind multimedia signal processing, compression, communication standards and specific multimedia related problems and projects at work.

The Guest of Honour, Prof M M Sufyan Beg (Principal, ZHCET) spoke on the recent developments in multimedia content processing and delivery over heterogeneous networks.

He pressed the need for gaining useful hands-on-experience in the design and implementation of signal processing techniques for multimedia applications.

Prof Ekram Khan (Chairperson, Department of Electronics Engineering and General Chair of the Conference) delivered the welcome address and extended gratitude to the IEEE UP Section for the technical sponsorship of the conference and Prof Mohammad Jawaid Siddiqui (Conference Chair) gave an overview of the events lined up in the conference.

On the occasion, Prof Sudhanshu Maheshwari (Department of Electronics Engineering) was felicitated with the ‘Academic Excellence Award’ for featuring in the Elsevier and the Stanford University, USA list of world’s top 2% researchers for three consecutive years.

Later the guests released Prof Muzaffar Ahmad Siddiqui’s book, ‘Continuous Time Active Analog Filters’ (Cambridge University Press) which explores the techniques of analog filter designs and their utilization in a large number of practical applications and ‘AMU Devanagri Handwritten Character Dataset’ prepared jointly by the Department of Electronics Engineering and the Interdisciplinary Centre for Artificial Intelligence.

Dr Naushad Alam extended the vote of thanks.

Scholars from the UK, Kingdom of Saudia Arabia, Dubai, IIT Bombay and IIT Indore delivered keynote lectures and a total of 98 research papers in eight technical sessions were presented in the conference. Over 100 faculty members and students attended the programme.
