Weeklong GIAN Course at Women’s College

Aligarh : The Women’s College, AMU hosted the inaugural ceremony of a Weeklong Online GIAN Course on “Manuals of Motherhood: Meditations on Transnational Literary Tropes”,

The Chief Guest for the session, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang (former Education Minister of Ghana and current Chancellor of Women’s University in Africa, Zimbabwe) emphasized that the academia needs to engage the topic of motherhood more since this idea of motherhood unites all of us and yet, it has always remained an area less explored.

The meeting was presided by Prof Tariq Mansoor, Vice Chancellor AMU, who said that various shades of motherhood from physical motherhood to the metaphorical one, pervade all our socio-political spaces, and demand a multidisciplinary critical engagement of the thinkers, scholars, doctors, lawyers, and academicians of the time.

Prof Fahlgren, the foreign faculty for the course (former Dean of Uppsala University, Sweden) stressed on the need for debate, discussions and knowledge sharing in the area of motherhood.

Prof Naima Khatoon, Principal of Women’s in her deliberation said scholars from seven countries and other dignitaries shared their experiences and knowledge on the discourse of motherhood, and its multidisciplinary nature.

Prof Nazia Hasan, Women’s College, delivered the keynote address, and her book titled “Interrupting the Monologue: The Poetics and Politics of Motherhood” was released by Prof Naima Khatoon.

Dr Kusumika Sarkar who coordinated the Course in her welcome address shared the course outline and emphasized the need for critical engagement by researchers and thinkers across fields on the subject.
