India aims to mobilize one billion people to take action against climate change: NITI Aayog CEO Parameswaran Iyer

NITI Aayog’s CEO Parameswaran Iyer today said that Mission LiFE( Lifestyle for Environment) is a dedicated, mission mode and India lead global movement that aims to bring individual and community behaviour at centre of climate action. He was virtually delivering a presentation on Mission LiFE at 1st Development Working Group meeting in a side event on ‘Infusing new LiFE into Green Development’ held in Mumbai. He said, India aims to mobilize one billion people to take individual and collective action against climate change through 2022-28.

Mr. Iyer said, India is nudging individuals, communities, and institutions to practice simple climate-friendly actions in their daily life. These 75 actions are categorized under Energy saved, Water saved, Single-use plastic reduced, sustainable food system adopted, waste reduced, healthy lifestyle adopted and E-waste reduced, he added. He said that these actions are easy to practice by individuals and likely to promote economic activity.

The CEO informed that Mission LiFE is endorsed by 10 countries including United Kingdom, France, etc. India has also proposed UN international LiFE Day, he added.

India’s G20 sherpa Amitabh Kant said that Mission LiFE has a lot to do with nudging behaviour. It is not countries that will make the change, it is individual and collective behaviour that will make the difference. He was delivering an opening speech in side event on ‘Infusing new LiFE into Green Development ‘ at 1st Development Working Group’s meeting in Mumbai today. He clarified that LiFE is not about anti-consumerism. It is a completely new model of development which involves a behavioral change to new areas of growth, he added. He said that The challenge for India and other developing countries is to follow a growth model that is different than developed nations like America. He expected that a Completely new model of growth or development has to come from emerging nations in terms of transportation, urbanization, plastics, etc.
