Bharatnatyam dancer Geeta Chandran receives NATYA KALASIKHAMANI AWARD from the Indian Fine Arts Society
Padmashri Geeta Chandran has been awarded Natya Kalasikhamani Award, a gold medal. On Sunday, 18th December the Indian Fine Arts Society is one of the oldest and most prestigious Sabhas in Chennai. Geeta received the Padmashri award in the year 2007. Nalli Kuppuswamy Chettiar and Sri K Harishankar the secretary of Narada Gana Sabha honoured her with the award.
Padmashri Geeta Chandran began her journey at the 5 under the tutelage of Guru Smt Swarna Saraswati. Geeta has imprinted Bharatanatyam with her unique personality and extremely challenging nritta sequences using them as a force multiplier to present the widest range of classical dance. Parallel to this Geeta has also shaped a unique format named performance dialogue in which she raises contemporary issues through her classical performances. ‘Simhika: Daughter of the forest’ highlighted the need for justice and rights for forest tribal. ‘Jayatu Bharatam’ celebrates 75 years of India’s independence are her previous popular performances
Padmashri Geeta Chandran is the Founder-President of NATYA VRIKSHA, the cultural organization founded in 1991, established in New Delhi as a leading centre for training in Bharatanatyam in its most composite form. Geeta is seen as a prominent Guru with imparting invaluable classical dance knowledge to future generations.
On 29 December 2022, Padmashri Geeta Chandran will perform with her disciples for the Indian Fine Arts Sabha and on 30 December, she will be performing ‘My Rainbow is Blue’, a solo Bharatanatyam performance at the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha.
