India will be covered by Doppler Weather Radar network by 2025: Dr Jitendra Singh

Earth Sciences Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh has said that the entire country will be covered by Doppler Weather Radar Network by 2025 to predict extreme weather events more accurately. He said, this network will enhance weather monitoring capabilities and benefit the farmers and other stakeholders to contribute significantly in the economy.

Delivering the keynote address on the occasion of 148th Foundation Day of Indian Meteorological Department, IMD in New Delhi today, Dr. Singh said, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, IMD has taken pro-active steps to increase the Radar Network from mere 15 in 2013 to 37 in 2023 and will add 25 more in next 2-3 years. He also informed that with the advent of latest technologies in the IMD, weather prediction accuracy has increased by about 20 to 40 percent for different severe weather events forecast during last five years.

On this occasion, the Minister also dedicated to the nation 4 Doppler Weather Radar Systems for Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. He also dedicated 200 Agro Automated Weather Stations to the Nation.

AIR Correspondent reports that Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Sukhvinder Singh and Lieutenant Governor of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha also attended the foundation day celebration through virtual mode. Director General of IMD Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra was also present on the occasion.
