The Mirror editor and Leeds alumna Alison Phillips (History and Politics 1993) will chair a panel talk with top female journalists based in Yorkshire.

Alison will be joined by Rozina Breen, editor-in-chief and CEO of The Bureau of Investigative Journalism and former head of BBC North; Louisa Compton, head of news and current affairs and sport at Channel 4; and Laura Collins, former editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper, and now publisher at National World.

During Alison’s time as editor, The Mirror has broken the stories which have shaped our nation’s politics – including the Partygate scandal which led to Boris Johnson being forced to quit, and Dominic Cummings’ infamous Covid rule-breaking trip to Barnard Castle.

The event sees her return to the University her journey began, where she’ll discuss a range of topics including how to promote yourself and your career in journalism. It presents an opportunity for students, staff and alumni to hear from experienced journalists at the top of the profession.

Prior to the event, Alison will give a talk to students about scoops, show business and sourcing the news.

“It is extremely exciting to have Alison back on campus,” said Kate Watkins, associate professor in journalism and director of TV news training at the School of Media. “As a Leeds graduate, Alison’s work is an inspiration for students and journalists alike.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for guests to gain insight into the profession and hear from a panel with such varied paths to success.”

Alison is also current chair of Women in Journalism, the leading networking, training, and campaigning organisation for female journalists. The not-for-profit organisation provides guidance and support for members.

The event takes place at 6pm, and will include welcome drinks, a panel discussion, and a network and drinks reception.
