AMU mourns the demise of former Chief Justice Aziz Mushabbar Ahmadi

ALIGARH  : Former Chief Justice of India and former Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Justice AM Ahmadi (Aziz Mushabbar Ahmadi), 91, passed away Thursday morning.

Expressing a deep sense of sorrow and grief on his demise, AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said Justice Ahmadi had a legendary status and AMU enjoyed a close and long relationship with him as he served the University for two terms as its Chancellor.”

“His death is a personal loss to the members of the AMU fraternity. I extended my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends and pray for a higher place for him in Jannah,” He added.

After leaving the Supreme Court, Justice Ahmadi became Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in September 2003 and served two terms in this capacity till January 2010.

He was born in Surat in 1932 and held the coveted post of CJI from 1994 to 1997.

Ahmadi started his legal career in 1954. He was assigned to the City Civil and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad, and was later elevated to the Gujarat High Court.

He was appointed to the Supreme Court in December 1988 and became 26th Chief Justice in 1994.

Indra Sawhney v. Union of India and Ismail Faruqui v. Union of India are two noteworthy judgements in which he participated at High Court level. He also served on the Ravi and Beas Waters Disputes Tribunal as part of the Rajiv-Longowal Settlement before being nominated to the Supreme Court of India in December 1988.

Justice Ahmadi wrote more than 230 judgements sitting on 811 benches in the Supreme Court of India.
