Senior Journo Admires Sports Facilities of AMU

Aligarh: Senior journalist Mr. Vikrant Gupta, Sports Head, Aaj Tak news channel called on the Pro Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Prof Mohammad Gulrez today, and appreciated the sports facilities in the University which has produced some of the best sportspersons of national and International fame including Mr. Zafar Iqbal, legendary Hockey player and former captain of the Indian team; Govinda, famous hockey player; famous cricketers Lala Amarnath, CS Naidu, and Syed Mushtaq Ali; Pole Vault National Champions, Musrraf Hussain and Ranveer Singh; National football players SA Qadri, Samad Tauqeer and Sultan Akhtar, Badminton players Sara Naqvi and Kanwaljeet Kaur among others.

The Pro Vice Chancellor apprised Mr. Gupta of the sports facilities available at the AMU Campus including the first ever Riding Club existing in any Central University in India.

Prof Gulrez said sports and games have been a very distinctive feature of AMU right from the days of MAO College, which was known not only for its high academic standards but also for excellent performance of its sportspersons in various games and sports events.

“From its very inception, the University has been a nursery of outstanding sports persons, and it has maintained this tradition with fervor. The Cricket Club is the oldest one and was established in 1879. Football (1894), Hockey (1902), Tennis (1904), Athletics, Riding (1894), Badminton and Swimming Clubs (1916) are also quite old. Clubs for BasketBall, Hiking and Mountaineering, Skating, Gymkhana etc., were established later on”, informed Prof Gulrez.

Mr. Gupta visited some of the sports facilities of the University including the century old Riding Club which has a Riding squad with 19 horses. AMU is the only University in the country having a Riding Club from the days of its inception.
