LSE academics Dr Kitty Stewart and Professor Tirthankar Roy have been elected Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences.

The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, practitioners and learned societies in the social sciences. The Academy has conferred Fellowships to fifty-six leading social scientists this spring, who are recognised for excellence in their fields and their wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit.

Dr Kitty Stewart, Associate Professor of Social Policy, is to be elected to the Fellowship in recognition of her contributions to the understanding of the drivers and consequences of child poverty, and the preventative role that can be played by social security and early years policy. Of her nomination, Dr Stewart said:

“I am delighted to have received this honour from the Academy of Social Sciences. We live in a society where poverty remains entrenched and inequalities are widespread. Social scientists have a key role to play in identifying policy solutions to these challenges, and in holding governments to account on their record and their use (or non-use) of research evidence. I’m very proud to have had my work recognised as playing a small part in this endeavour.”

Professor Tirthankar Roy, Professor in Economic History, said of his nomination:

“The Fellowship nomination is an honour and a recognition of the value of the work of economic historians. Evidence-based debates about the deep roots of growth and inequality can enrich the understanding of the present. Recent years have seen significant advances in that direction through, for example, the inclusion of the experiences of relatively under-researched regions in comparative studies.”
