AMU marks centenary year with increase in medical and dental PG seats
Aligarh: Medical is still the most sought after course and universities offering the course strive for increasing the intake and efforts hardly bore fruits. But a gap of more than 50 years sustained and the untiring efforts of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, who happens to be a medical practitioner met with incredible success as an additional 26 postgraduate seats in MD courses were sanctioned to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) and the Dr. Ziauddin Ahmad Dental College (ZADC) for the 2020-21 academic session by the Medical and Dental Councils of India.
The Medical Council of India (MCI) approved the proposal to allot 21 PG seats for the MD (General Medicine) course, which is nearly a two-fold increase from 12 seats yearly since 1965. The MCI also increased the intake of MD (Community Medicine) seats to 11 from six, the MD (Pharmacology) seats to 12 from four and the MD (Radio diagnosis) course will now have a batch of 11 students instead of 9.
Similarly, the Dental Council of India has permitted an extra seat each in MD (Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery) and MD (Prosthodontics). Both courses will admit three students in 2020-21 academic session, instead of the intake of two students till the previous session.
AMU Vice Chancellor, Prof Tariq Mansoor said that the increase in the number of postgraduate seats has come at a time, when AMU is entering its centenary year.
“As we mark the 100th year celebration of the university, the increase in the number of seats will be a tribute to the University founder, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and his vision of modern scientific education,” said Prof Mansoor.
He also showed gratitude to the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council of India and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
