HKU launches three online support initiatives for secondary school and HKDSE students amid coronavirus outbreak
As school suspension continues due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has launched a series of online support initiatives to encourage secondary school students to continue learning at home to enhance their knowledge.
The initiatives include an online course platform “HKU Cloud-based Learning”, giving secondary school students an opportunity to maximise their time for knowledge advancement especially during this no-schooling period, and the Top scorers’ Facebook Live Study-tips Sharing sessions for HKDSE and IB candidates. At the same time, HKU Student Ambassadors have also launched “IG Homework Chatroom” on Instagram to take questions from students who encounter difficulties when studying at home.
“HKU Cloud-based Learning” – Study with us at home!
To allow students to enhance their knowledge at home, HKU has prepared a series of online courses that are informative, intriguing and suitable for secondary school students. These carefully-selected courses include various topics covering medicine, economics, technology, social sciences and humanities. Students can choose to enroll in these free online courses according to their interest and acquire new knowledge anytime, anywhere. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to learn from renowned HKU professors and experience HKU lectures at home. Some of the online courses come with assessments, and students who complete the assessments can receive a certificate. Since a fee will be charged for the assessment part, for schools that do not have sufficient online teaching resources but are interested to extend the assessment to their students, the HKU Academy for the Talented will offer subsidies to schools in need.
The online courses cover trending topics, such as:
“Epidemics I & II” – Learn about the origin, spread and control of epidemics with world-renowned experts from the HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.
“Making Sense of News” – Learn how to analyse information critically from the HKU Journalism and Media Studies Centre in this media era where facts and fictions coexist.
“Blockchain and FinTech: Basics, Applications, and Limitations” – Understand the design rationale of blockchain technology, its emerging platforms and applications from the HKU Faculty of Engineering.
