University of Glasgow, University of Sydney strengthen partnership with joint PhD arrangement
The University of Glasgow and the University of Sydney have further strengthened their strategic partnership with a new joint PhD arrangement.
The joint PhD Principal Agreement builds on the existing partnership between the two institutions and will provide even greater opportunities for research collaboration and student learning.
The MoA will provide a framework that makes joint PhD supervision across a broad range of subjects and disciplines quicker and simpler to implement.
The first round of PhD students to benefit from the arrangement will be through the collaboration between students and researchers at the University of Glasgow’s College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences and the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre.

The agreement was signed by Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Glasgow’s Principal and Vice Chancellor, and the University of Sydney’s Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mark Scott AO, on a visit to Gilmorehill.
Professor Muscatelli said: “We have an extensive and extremely productive strategic partnership with the University of Sydney and I am delighted to sign a new agreement with Mark that will make it easier for greater collaboration for research and teaching.
“Our universities are already sharing so much best practice in research facilities and professional support services, and the new joint degree PhD agreement will develop our partnership activity even further.”
Professor Scott said: “At the University of Sydney we are committed to building strong international partnerships, both now and into the future. Our connections with Glasgow on research and student mobility are long established.
“This new joint PhD program builds upon those foundations and will provide a great opportunity for our PhD students to develop global connections and to make a significant contribution in important areas of research.”
The priority partnership between the University of Glasgow and the University of Sydney is an excellent example of successful international collaboration. It is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2016 in which both universities have committed to work closely to develop a range of joint teaching and research opportunities.
The new MoA is the latest agreement between the two universities. Other include:
University-Level Partnership Cooperation Agreement, including a commitment to supporting the PCA funding awards.
MoU between MVLS and Charles Perkins Centre.
MoU between the Adam Smith Business School and University of Sydney Business School.
A student Exchange Agreement to facilitate undergraduate student exchange.
The universities have also held a host of joint events and seminars in recent years as well as funded joint research across a number of subjects across all Colleges.
