National Seminar begins on Indian English Poetry: Toru Dutt to Vanavil K. Ravi
ALIGARH : The Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University organized a two-day National Seminar on “Indian English Poetry: Toru Dutt to Vanavil K. Ravi” with the objective to explore the genealogy of Indian Poetry written in English.
In his Presidential remarks, Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mohammad Gulrez said that “poetry is the only link with the civilization”. He emphasized that reading between and beyond the lines is an important essence of understanding any poetic piece, as poetry has to be felt and absorbed internally.
Highlighting the power of poetry, he remarked that poetry reflects the pangs and agony of society. He emphasized the significance of Indian English poetry in enhancing the domain of Third World literature. He urged the students and researchers to explore resources and strengthen the knowledge of the subject beyond their syllabus.
In his welcome address, Prof. Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of English, discussed the significance of the theme of the seminar as “momentous and historic”. Tracing the history of the university in general, and that of the Department in particular, Prof. Siddiqui highlighted the contribution of the Department towards the perpetuation of poetry in India not only in English but also in other languages.
He remarked, “From the times when Indian English Poetry was not considered important, we have come a long way”. He appreciated the poetic contribution of the teachers from the Department and mentioned their names, including Prof. Zahida Zaidi, Prof. Attia Abid, Prof. Seemin Hasan, Prof. Aysha Munira Rasheed, and Prof. Sami Rafiq. He further added that though Indian Poetry was a late arrival in English studies in India, the Department of English kept pace with the changes and made timely inclusion of Indian English writings in its syllabi.
The Chief Guest, Mr. Vanavil K. Ravi, a renowned poet, who writes in Tamil and English, expressed his gratitude for acknowledging his work by including his name in the title of the seminar. He remarked that seminars are an opportunity to discuss poetry not only in the abstract but to break away the barriers and bring together peace and harmony. He added that poetry is with everyone but only a few are able to realize and understand its true meaning. He emphasized the eternal nature of poetry and aptitude towards celebrating it with each other. He concluded his address by reciting a few lines of his poem.
The convener, Prof Munira T, introduced the theme of the seminar and highlighted the significance of celebrating Indian English Poetry. She emphasized the importance of Indian literary tradition as one of the oldest in the world. Quoting Buddhist tarries from the sixth century B.C., she spoke about the diversity in Indian Poetics. She also highlighted the spiritual interface exhibited in Indian Poetry.
The Guest of Honour, Prof. Ameena Kazi Ansari, spoke about the evolution of pedagogical frameworks of English studies towards Indian Literature. She congratulated the organizers on organizing a Seminar on a theme that tries to break away from the colonial literary discourse and celebrate Indian literary tradition. She stressed the contribution of translation in expanding English studies in India and incorporating Indian literature in syllabi across universities in India.
Another Guest of Honour, Prof. Ranu Uniyal Pant, spoke about the diversity of themes in Indian English Poetry ranging from spirituality to climate change. She said that poetry is born out of restlessness and initiates peace. Stressing the contemporaneity of poetry, she said mere poetry can allow one to attain sanity.
