US professor delivers lecture on intelligence in children

Aligarh : “Efforts should be made to inculcate different kinds of intelligences in children at school level and teachers need to make efforts to create a sense of collaboration in classrooms instead of stressing on competitiveness”, said Prof Poonam Arora (former Professor, English and Media Studies, Michigan University, USA), while delivering a lecture on “Multiple Intelligences in Primary and Secondary Education in India: Theory, Practice and Recommendations”. The lecture was organized by the Department of Education, Aligarh Muslim University.

Highlighting the importance of various kinds of multiple intelligences required for the wellbeing of individuals, Prof Arora pointed out, “We have made some of the important Intelligences such as interpersonal intelligence, bodily kinesthetic intelligence and existential intelligence weak without their proper use”. She said there was a close relationship between Mathematical and Musical Intelligence.

Prof Arora said there was a need to inculcate moral values in students and the education system should focus on moral empowerment of child and character building.

Earlier, Prof Nasrin (Chairperson, Department of Education) welcomed the guest and elaborated the topic of the lecture.

Prof Mohammad Jahangir Warsi (Chairperson, Department of Linguistics) gave brief introduction about the speaker.

Dr Mehmood Ali proposed a vote of thanks while Dr Shazia Mansoori conducted the programme.
