Environment Day observations continue
ALIGARH : The World Environment Day related events, including plantation of saplings, awareness lectures, competitive programmes, continued to be held at the various departments, schools and centres of the Aligarh Muslim University.
The resident members and wardens of the Hadi Hasan Hall planted saplings under the leadership of the provost, Prof Ghulam Sarwar Hashmi. Various types of plants, including Aaroo, Chikoo, Neem and Naaspati, etc. were planted in the Hall premises.
The Department of Land and Gardens started the augmentation of the composting facility for dry leaves on university premises. It made a big arrangement for the collection and dumping of fallen leaves during the leave-shedding period from February to April. It takes about six months for the dumped leaves to get converted into leave mould which is used for enriching the soil and the potted plants. Every year the department prepares about 10 tons of leaf mould which will be doubled this year.
At an awareness programme held at the Department of Post Harvest Engineering and Technology, the chief guest, Prof. Abdul Alim, Dean, Students’ Welfare (DSW) urged the students to plant at least one sapling and contribute to the green cover in the university.
The guest of honour, Prof. Rais Ahmad, Dean, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences discussed the environmental challenges, including global warming and plastic waste menace. He stated the importance of the three Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle for sustainable living and development.
The guests also took part in the plantation drive.
At the Maulana Azad Library, Prof. Nishat Fatima, University Librarian administered an oath to create awareness among people to conserve the environment. She also led the team of library officials to plant tree saplings on the lawns of the Maulana Azad Library.
The Department of Electrical Engineering, in collaboration with the Centre of Green and Renewable Energy, AMU and IET-Delhi Local Network, organized a youth conclave on Mission LiFE and sustainability. An Ideas Workshop on conservation practices on the campus was also held to mark the day.
Mr. Pradeep Chaturvedi, Vice President-World Environment Foundation and Institute of Directors, India delivered an expert talk on “Growth Through Low Carbon Technology”.
The K. A. Nizami Centre for Quranic Studies organized a series of events in connection with World Environment Day. Prof Wazahat Husain, Former Chairperson, Department of Botany delivered a lecture, describing various plants mentioned in the Quran. He also discussed the nutritional value of different fruits and later visited the “Quran Garden” developed by the Centre and planted saplings with students and faculty members.
Dr. Faiza Abbasi, Director, UGC-HRDC delivered an online lecture on “Five Pillars of Eco-Islam”.
A slogan writing competition on “How the teachings of the Quran can save the Environment” was also organized on this occasion.
Moreover, teachers and students took a pledge for the conservation of the environment at various schools and centres, including the AMU Centres at Malappuram, Kerala, Kishanganj, Bihar and Murshidabad, West Bengal, and Begum Azeezun Nisa Hall.
