Brock University Prof Awarded With National Honour
Assistant Professor Jordan House in the Department of Labour Studies and co-author Asaf Rashid have received the Leo Panitch Book Prize from the Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies (CAWLS).
The award honours the best book in Canadian work and labour studies for the previous year. House and Rashid received the award for their book, Solidarity Behind Bars: Unionizing Prison Labour, at the CAWLS annual conference on Tuesday, May 30.
House says he and Rashid have been “thrilled” with the positive response they received since the book was released by Fernwood Publishing in November 2022.
“It is an honour to win this prize and receive this kind of recognition,” he says. “We hope that the book gets people thinking a bit more about the role of imprisonment in Canadian society — and the idea that if employment and labour rights are truly rights, they must be enjoyed universally.”
Professor Larry Savage, Chair of the Department of Labour Studies, calls the award a “significant achievement.”
“The Department is thrilled to have Dr. House’s co-authored book recognized by the Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies for its outstanding contribution to the field,” says Savage.
