Department of Plant Protection Celebrates “World Firefly Day”
Aligarh : The Department of Plant Protection, Aligarh Muslim University in collaboration with the national initiative “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” and the global platform “G20 summit,” celebrated “World Firefly Day” on July 3. This event aimed to raise awareness about the ecological significance of fireflies, showcasing the department’s commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation. The celebration witnessed the presence of noted entomologists, Prof. P.Q. Rizvi and Prof. M.S. Ansari, as Chief Guests.
During his speech, Prof. P.Q. Rizvi highlighted that fireflies symbolize a healthy and hygienic environment. He provided valuable insights into the habitat requirements for conserving these creatures, which can enhance the beauty of our surroundings, especially at night. Prof. M.S. Ansari, another distinguished entomologist, delivered a captivating lecture on the technical aspects of fireflies, including their carnivorous nature and the protein responsible for their illuminating lamps.
Prof. Mujeebur Rahman Khan, Chairperson of the Department, in his welcome note emphasized the importance of fireflies in the ecosystem. He reminded everyone of the interconnectedness between humans and nature, urging them to become responsible custodians of the planet.
Prof Khan commended the teaching staff for organizing the event that showcased their unwavering dedication to fostering cooperation, creativity, and a commitment to ecology and the environment.
An interactive session allowed participants to engage in fruitful discussions on fireflies. Students, research scholars, and teaching staff had the opportunity to ask questions and gain further knowledge about these magical insects. The session revealed the participants’ deep interest in fireflies and demonstrated the significance of the event.
The audience comprised students, research scholars, and both teaching and non-teaching staff of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences.
