University of the Western Cape placed in best in Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has ranked fourth among South African universities in the inaugural Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings 2023. Throughout the entire Sub-Saharan Africa region, UWC has secured the 6th spot.

The rankings have been created to recognise and celebrate the achievements of universities in the region. They highlight the diversity and quality of higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa. By creating a dedicated ranking system, Times Higher Education seeks to recognise and promote the universities that excel in various aspects of education, research and knowledge dissemination within this region.

The methodology for these rankings was developed through extensive engagement with university leaders across the region. The rankings use a hybrid methodology that covers five key pillars to account for the diverse strengths of this regional higher education sector:

  • Infrastructure, resources and finances
  • Access and fairness
  • Teaching skills, with a strong focus on graduate employability
  • Student engagement (including involvement in leadership)
  • African Impact, including research impact, with a focus on sustainable development
