North-West University alum contributes artwork to NWU Library
North-West University (NWU) alumnus and avid artist Georgie Bhunu donated a captivating painting titled “Faces of Neglect” to the library on the NWU’s Mahikeng Campus.
He created the artwork in 1993 and says it holds profound symbolism. “It embodies the concept of an artist striving to establish a new order,” explains Georgie.
“The artwork serves as a reminder of our shared humanity with the subjects portrayed, urging us to reflect on the foundation upon which future generations build their understanding. By creating this art piece, I recognise the responsibility of repaying a debt to the future, and to critically examine the assimilation of this reality and its underlying intentions,” he adds.
On the same day, Prof Jan Buscop, a former academic, also donated three artworks he received from a visiting professor while he was with the NWU.
Prof Sonia Swanepoel, deputy vice-chancellor for community engagement and Mahikeng Campus operations, and Dr Tiyani Mabunda, director of the library, graciously accepted the artworks.
