Book-reading session organized at Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University

ALIGARH July 21: The Department of Linguistics, Aligarh Muslim University organized a Book Reading Session on July 19, 2023 to mark the National Reading Day, commemorating the Father of the Library Movement in Kerala, late Shri P. N. Panicker.

The Programme Coordinator, Dr Nazrin B. Laskar underlined the importance of ‘reading’ and highlighted how reading improves our cognitive faculties and hones our analytical skills and creativity. She said reading provides us with knowledge about different cultures, philosophies, ideas and expands our mental horizon.

Dr Sabahuddin Ahmad read a few chapters from the famous historical Urdu novel, “Aag ka Dariya” (River of Fire) by QurratulAin Haider and explained how the book chronicles the different periods in the Indian subcontinent’s history, spanning from the Mauryan Empire to the end of the Lodhi dynasty, to the beginning of the Mughal rule, to the consolidation of the British Raj, and to the traumatic partition of India.

Dr Abdul Aziz Khan discussed the Novel “Basti” by Intizar Husain, a beautifully written novel covering the tragic history of Pakistan from its creation. Dr Shamim Fatma, discussed the book, “The Last Lecture”, a memoir of Randy Pausch, a Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. Dr Nazrin B. Laskar read a few chapters from the novel “Joke” by the famous Czech writer, Milan Kundera, who recently passed away.
