AMU implements National Education Policy 2020 with Remarkable Achievements
ALIGARH : The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has made significant strides in the implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP-2020), marking a major achievement in its educational endeavors. As mandated by the University Grants Commission, AMU established a dedicated NEP Cell on November 24, 2021, for effective implementation of the NEP-2020 within the university.
To ensure timely implementation and establish the necessary guidelines, AMU also constituted the NEP Advisory Committee, which decided to implement NEP-2020 from the academic session 2022-23.
Addressing the media persons today at the Administrative Block Conference Hall, Dr. Mujib Ullah Zuberi, Controller, Dr. Suhel Mustajab, Coordinator, NEP Cell, Prof Asfar Ali Khan, Director, Directorate of School Education, AMU, and Prof Asad U Khan, Director, IQAC, said that the NEP Advisory Committee’s efforts have yielded impressive results, and several initiatives have been successfully undertaken, such as:
Curriculum and Credit Framework for Undergraduate Programmes: A credit framework for the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme has been formulated and introduced in various faculties, including Arts, Commerce, Science, Social Science, Life-Science, International Studies, and Theology, starting from the academic session 2022-23.
Guidelines for Transforming Higher Education Institutions into Multidisciplinary Institutions: The four-year undergraduate programme (B.A./B.Sc./B.Com.) at AMU now emphasizes a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to choose their own trajectory by selecting subjects from different faculties. Vocational and Value-Added courses have also been introduced to enhance students’ skills, and research opportunities have been incorporated through Research Methodology and Seminars in the final year of the programme.
Guidelines for Multiple Entry and Exit in Academic Programmes: AMU has introduced a Curriculum and Credit Framework that aligns with the NEP-2020 objectives, offering students a choice-based credit system. This framework allows students to have multiple entry and exit options at the end of every academic year in the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme. The necessary regulations for implementation are currently being prepared, pending approval from the Academic Ordinances.
Guideline for Apprenticeship/Internship embedded degree programme: Under the four-year undergraduate programme, students now have opportunities for practical experiences such as Apprenticeship, Internship, Field Project, Community Outreach Programme, and Dissertation in their final year. Departments of studies have been given the freedom to introduce these programmes based on their available infrastructure and faculty.
Regulation of Academic Bank of Credit: AMU has established an Academic Bank of Credit (ABC)/ National Academic Depository (NAD) Cell and appointed a Nodal Officer to implement the Academic Bank of Credit and National Academic Depository within the university. The Digilocker platform has been adopted for ABC and NAD implementation, with thousands of students having created ABC IDs. Regular meetings with UGC and NAD officials are being conducted to ensure smooth implementation of this segment.
These achievements align with the larger goals of NEP-2020 and further initiatives undertaken by AMU include the implementation of the National Credit Framework (NCrF) for AMU schools and the National Higher Education Qualification Framework (NHEQF). Guidelines for pursuing two academic programs simultaneously have been adopted, and minimum standards and procedures for the award of PhD degrees are being finalized.
AMU has also expanded its reach in online and distance education, providing quality education to thousands of students through its dedicated Online and Distance Learning Centre. The university has established an Office for International Affairs to assist NRI and foreign national students, and its extensive global alumni network has further strengthened its ties worldwide.
With a focus on innovation and industry-oriented learning, AMU has introduced new programmes such as M.Sc. (Cyber Security), M.Sc. (Data Science), B.Tech. and M.Tech. (Artificial Intelligence), Bachelor of Visual Arts (B.V.A.), Master of Visual Arts (M.V.A.), and approved the 4-year Integrated B.Ed. programme.
These achievements reflect AMU’s commitment to providing a holistic and inclusive education aligned with the vision of NEP-2020. The university remains dedicated to fostering excellence and empowering its students to thrive in the evolving educational landscape.
