FAO at the 78th UN General Assembly High-Level Week, SDG Action Weekend and SDG Summit

The 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly will mark a crucial milestone in the journey towards achieving the 2030 Agenda and the urgent need to put the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track.

The world will come together around the theme ‘Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all’.

Food security, nutrition and efficient, inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems are critical for achieving the 2030 Agenda. They contribute to ending poverty, improving health and education outcomes, empowering women, ensuring the optimized use of natural resources as well as sustainable consumption and production, creating decent jobs and livelihood opportunities, reducing inequalities and rural-urban disparities, and tackling the climate crisis and biodiversity loss.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is participating in this year’s UN General Assembly with a delegation led by Director-General QU Dongyu.

During the SDG Action weekend (16-17 September) the FAO Director-General will participate in high-level events related to the twelve High Impact Initiatives (HII) aimed at demonstrating transformative change and mobilizing further leadership and investment to bring progress to scale between now and 2030, specifically on the ‘High-Level Session on the High Impact Initiative on Food Systems Transformation: Transforming food systems for a world without hunger’ and ‘Local2030 Coalition: Pushing key transitions and achieving the SDGs by 2030’.

On the sidelines of the SDG Summit (18-19 September), and in partnership with Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), the Director-General will present a Joint Call to Action for Forests Towards 2030, stressing the need for enhanced action and political will to strengthen the implementation of forest solutions for achieving the SDGs and other global goals.

At Columbia University, QU Dongyu will deliver a Keynote speech during the 11th Annual International Conference on Sustainable Development (ICSD) (20 September).

On the same day, in collaboration with Italy, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, and the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, FAO will host a side event on catalyzing global action for agrifood systems transformation to accelerate SDGs.

The Director-General and the FAO delegation will also participate in other events during the high-level week (19-26 September) as well as in the margins of New York Climate Week.
