The editorial team of the Records Management Journal selected Katuu as the Outstanding Reviewer due to their exceptional reviewing process, which is characterised by thoroughness and meticulous attention to detail. Reflecting on this recognition, Katuu said: “The publisher acknowledged that the thoroughness and careful attention to detail that I have demonstrated throughout this year set me apart among my colleagues in this esteemed position.”

Katuu, a former lecturer in the Department of Information Sciences, has served as a reviewer of the Records Management Journal since 2015, thoughtfully evaluating and assessing a total of 49 scholarly publications. Their average review rate of six manuscripts per year highlights their dedication to contributing substantively to the journal’s rigorous reviewing process.

Katuu shared their approach to peer review, emphasising the importance of constructive and non-confrontational feedback. “High-quality review is characterised by a constructive and non-confrontational approach, aimed at assisting the author in enhancing the quality of their submission. It is imperative that reviews are conducted promptly to adhere to the deadlines set forth by the journal,” Katuu said.

Katuu offered valuable advice for aspiring reviewers, emphasising the opportunity to actively engage with ground-breaking research and to refine critical thinking skills. “This active involvement with the research community enables reviewers to cultivate a profound comprehension of diverse methodologies, theoretical frameworks and emerging advancements in the field,” they explained.

Katuu’s commitment to staying up to date with the latest developments and trends in records management is notable. They actively engage in international scholarly research endeavours and contribute to standards generating bodies like the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO). In doing so, they ensure that their understanding remains at the forefront of knowledge, enhancing the value they bring to the peer review process.

In reflecting on memorable experiences and lessons learnt as a reviewer and a scholar in the field, Katuu emphasised the importance of subject expertise and ethical guidelines in peer review. They noted: “It becomes imperative for reviewers to promptly notify the journal’s editors if they realise their limitations in assessing certain aspects of the manuscripts, upholding scholarly integrity within their professional practice.”

Looking to the future, Katuu aspires to produce innovative and influential research outcomes while empowering future generations of researchers. They aim to enhance the reputation and status of the College of Human Sciences and to contribute to the advancement of South Africa’s tertiary education institutions.
