UrFU Student to Embark on Thrilling Arctic Expedition

Ekaterina Satonina, a fourth-year student of the Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of UrFU, won the “Ticket to the Arctic” contest for students and young scientists. Out of more than 300 thousand participants from all over the country, the jury selected 10 winners who will go on an Arctic expedition in early October.

The student has developed a project on the use of drones in the Arctic, which will be equipped with cameras and sensors to monitor the environmental situation. The drones will track pollution, monitor ice cover and climate change.

“I didn’t believe I could win – all the works were great, the performances were great too, but I was really worried, I thought that the model of my project wouldn’t be appreciated either, but everyone loved it and my theme immensely. I really want to go on a scientific expedition as soon as possible! I want to see the Kolsk NPP, the icebreaker “Lenin”, the northern lights, and my biggest dream is to see whales with my own eyes!” – Ekaterina shared her impressions.

The contest was held by an autonomous non-profit organization “Clean Arctic” within the framework of the federal project “Popularization of Science and Technology” with grant support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. The project contributes to achieving the goals of the national project “Education”.
