Gurushala and Samagra Shiksha SEMAM Launch Education Leadership Development Program in Meghalaya

New Delhi : Gurushala, a teacher capacity building platform, is an initiative of Indus Towers Ltd. and Vodafone Idea Foundation and implemented by Pratham Education Foundation, in collaboration with Samagra Shiksha SEMAM, has launched an Education Leadership Development Program in Meghalaya. The program commenced on September 25th, 2023, at Shillong Public School, East Khasi Hills. A total of 600 teachers and school leaders are the beneficiaries of this program. The program is unfolding across six districts of Meghalaya, commencing with the East Khasi Hills District. The journey then extends to Nongpoh, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, and will culminate in South Garo Hills on October 13th, 2023.

The Education Leadership Development Program begins with face-to-face training sessions centered on the theme of “Identifying and Bridging the Learning Gaps.” These sessions will be complemented by a series of virtual training sessions, ensuring continuous support and professional development for the participants. Transforming schools into “centers of excellence” necessitates a paradigm shift in the role of teachers towards proactive practices for school transformation. This transformation is not a one-time endeavor but a journey that requires long-term capacity building to equip education leaders to address real-life challenges in schools. The goal is to empower them with the skills and knowledge needed to foster excellence in education.

During the first day of the training, the discussion centered around grasping the concept of learning gaps, recognizing them, and employing effective methods to minimize these gaps in students. This emphasis is in line with the broader goal of enhancing students’ educational achievements. On the second day of the training, the instructors emphasized the principles outlined in the National Education Policy 2020. The policy encourages a shift away from memorization-based learning, highlighting the importance of fostering students’ conceptual understanding, nurturing their unique skill sets, and promoting experiential and skill-based learning. With an overarching goal of reducing the learning gaps in students, teachers were introduced to novel strategies and approaches that can be readily applied in their classrooms.

This collaborative effort between Gurushala and Samagra Shiksha SEMAM underscores a commitment to strengthening education in Meghalaya, enhancing the capabilities of educators, and ultimately contributing to holistic development.
