Johns Hopkins APL Programs Develop Maryland’s Future STEM Workforce
In the past five years, nearly 17,000 Maryland students have participated in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland — including high numbers of minority and female students, who are often underrepresented in STEM fields.
Among these students, the Laboratory has hired more than 140 of its program participants, either to full-time roles or college internships.
“At APL, we recognize that we have a responsibility to help develop the next generation of STEM talent,” said Dwight Carr, the program manager for APL’s STEM Program Management Office. “The conversion of program participants into Laboratory employees shows us that we are succeeding in that mission.”
