Lancaster University Commemorates Black History Month with Various Events and Initiatives
Lancaster University is marking this year’s Black History Month, with the theme of “saluting our sisters”.
Staff and students have joined with the University’s library to host a number of events and activities, which are all open to the wider community.
Throughout the month, the Here to Wonder exhibition will feature the work of Lela Harris, showcasing some of her original illustrations for the Folio edition of The Color Purple, and some of her newest work on celebrating “beautiful ordinary women”. The exhibition can be found in the library’s exhibition space under the stairwell on A-Floor, until October 23rd.
On October 18th, ‘Talking to Transgress’: Decolonising as the Practice of Freedom will take place from 1pm to 3pm, and will explore what decolonising might mean from the perspective of students.
And on October 23rd, Learning Blackness in Higher Education History will be led by award-winning historian and Honorary Researcher Sofia Akel. Sofia will be in conversation with a current student about what it means to be a Black student at Lancaster, and how that relates to experiences of reading (Black) History at Lancaster, and what Black History Month means for them.
