University Extension Lecture held on drug discovery for Cancer

 

ALIGARH : The Department of Pharmacology, JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a University Extension Lecture on “Drug Discovery for Cancer from Indian Traditional Medicines Adopting Reverse Pharmacology” by Prof. M. A. Akbarsha, Biomedical Scientist and Research Coordinator, National College (Autonomous), Tiruchirappalli.

He shared his research work on generating scientific proofs for efficacy and safety of Indian medicines and the discovery of few drug molecules from Indian medicines for cancer particularly scientific proofs for efficacy and safety of Rasa Genthi Mezhugu, a Siddha Medicine, for cancer. Likewise, he shared his experimental studies using prostate, lung and breast cancer cell lines and how he identified Urushiols as the major active principle of the Siddha herbal medicine, Semecarpus Lehyam, as antitumor agents for treatment of breast cancer.

Earlier, Prof. Syed Ziaur Rahman, Chairman, Department of Pharmacology, introduced the speaker and thanked Prof. Nisar Ahmad Khan, Coordinator, University Extension Lectures.
