UAB Launches State-of-the-Art Sports and Exercise Medicine Clinic for Comprehensive Care
The newly expanded Sports and Exercise Medicine Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham is now open to serve patients of all activity levels. Supported by the departments of Family and Community Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, this multidisciplinary clinic will offer a full spectrum of sports and exercise medicine services, including non-operative and surgical sports medicine. The clinic will also offer multiple sub-specialties, including nutrition, orthobiologics, cardio sports medicine, exercise in pregnancy, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.
“Here at UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine, we pride ourselves on providing quality, comprehensive care to each of our patients,” said Irfan Asif, M.D., chair of the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine. “We are looking forward to treating our patients in this expanded clinic, where they can have all their sports and exercise medicine needs met in one convenient location.”
UAB Sports and Exercise Medicine specializes in the evaluation, management, rehabilitation and prevention of injury and disorders in patients of all ages. The clinic offers cutting-edge sports science with the latest therapies, innovative treatments and injury prevention programs not found anywhere else in the region, including its concussion, cardiac and exercise is medicine programs.

Whether patients are professional athletes or weekend warriors, UAB’s state-of-the-art facilities and top-notch specialists are dedicated to helping patients keep doing the activities they love. The clinic is equipped with 22 exam rooms, two procedure rooms, two radiology and ultrasound suites, and an exercise room to be able to provide patients with the personalized care they deserve.
“We are excited to expand upon our current care offerings,” said Amit Momaya, M.D., chief of UAB Sports Medicine. “Through a comprehensive approach, our highly experienced team of care professionals will work together to restore our patients to their prior level of play in a timely and safe fashion.”
The clinical staff is composed of physicians, care coordinators, certified athletic trainers, physical therapists, radiologists, psychologists, nutritionists and pedorthists who have years of experience treating high school, collegiate, professional and adaptive athletes.
“The opportunity for patients to see all of their sports medicine providers in one location is a significant benefit,” said Dale Colorado, D.O., vice chair in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. “Besides convenience and peace of mind, it also allows the care team to work together to build a comprehensive treatment plan to get our patients back to their normal activities.
