University of Freiburg Breaks Top 10 in Latest Humboldt Ranking, Continuing Academic Excellence

Internationalization and research: These two University of Freiburg hallmarks are reflected in the current Humboldt ranking. The University of Freiburg is regarded by visiting scholars from abroad as a particularly attractive place to do research and ranks 10th nationwide. A total of 113 holders of Humboldt Foundation fellowships and awards conducted research at the University of Freiburg in the past years.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation evaluated the research stays of its fellows and awardees between 2018 and 2022 for the ranking. This included a total of nearly 6,500 research stays at 130 higher education institutions and more than 400 non-university research institutes and other institutions. To avoid statistical biases arising from the different sizes of the host institutions, the ranking puts the stays in relation to the number of professorships at the respective institution. The top 10 also includes universities in Berlin, Konstanz, Munich, Heidelberg, and Göttingen.
