Equity Dialogues Series to Continue with Discussion on Systemic Racism
The second drop-in event in a series meant to encourage conversations around human rights and equity resources on campus takes place later this month.
Hosted by Brock’s Human Rights and Equity (HRE) Office, the Equity Dialogues open space event will take place Wednesday, Feb. 28 from noon to 2 p.m. in Sankey Chamber.
Held monthly, the events focus on two resources shared in advance through the Equity Dialogues series on The Brock News. The resources address a single topic from two levels — beginner and competent — so learners can choose which resource meets their learning needs.
February’s resources on the topic of systemic racism are:
- Beginner: An online video, “Systemic Racism Explained,” provides insight into what systemic racism is and how people can work together to solve it. While the video is focused on the U.S., several topics discussed correlate to Canada, including redlining neighborhoods, implicit bias and histories of slavery and racial segregation.
- Competent: In the TEDx Talk, “The Fresh Prince Syndrome,” Matthew Morris, now an instructor in Brock’s Faculty of Education, discusses the barriers faced by young, Black men in the educational system, while making eye-opening comparisons to the popular ’90s sitcom. He shares his experiences as a student and a teacher, as well as lessons he has learned along the way.
