National Science Day observed with vigour

 

ALIGARH  : The Department of Physics, Aligarh Muslim University organized a commemorative programme on the National Science Day-2024, which is observed to mark the discovery of the Raman Effect by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on February 28, 1928, for which he received the Nobel Prize

In his address, the chief guest, former Vice Chancellor, HNB Garhwal Univerdsity, Prof. S. K. Singh talked about the scientific acumen of Sir C.V. Raman and discussed the relevance of his discovery in present context.

He emphasised that the students should be exposed to the scientific researches carried out by their teachers as this will help in producing future scientists and take the nation ahead in scientific innovations.

The guest of honour, Prof. S. Umasankar (Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay) remembered his colleagues from AMU with whom he interacted on various topics and shared research anecdotes. He urged the students and young faculty members to adopt a modern scientific outlook and critical aptitude, and question everything they come across in their studies.

He also delivered a talk on “Neutrinos: What we know and what we don’t” in the evening session.

The special guest, Prof. Kajari Mazumdar (Department of High Energy Physics, School of Natural Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai) pointed out that several AMU faculty members have collaborations with TIFR people and there is always a room for new ideas and academic exchange. She exhorted the students to study science as a fun flair.

She delivered a talk on “The Higgs Boson: why and How?”

The Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Qamrul Hasan Ansari emphasized the importance of celebrating the science day and suggested ways to improve the quality of research which will eventually help in improving the ranking of the University.

Earlier, welcoming the guests, Prof M. Sajjad Athar, Chairman of the department, gave an overview of the activities organized by the department in near past and highlighted its achievements.

The Physics Bulletin-2024 and the Annual Report-2023 were released by the chief guest, Prof. S. K. Singh.

Prof. Umasankar and Prof. Mazumdar judged the submissions under the poster presentation competition held to mark the day.

Dr Jai Prakash (Convener, National Science Day Celebrations Committee) conducted the programme and extended a vote of thanks.
