University of Warwick Hosts 2024 Warwick Africa Summit: Celebrating, Collaborating, and Driving Change”
The University of Warwick’s annual Warwick Africa Summit returns on the 2nd & 3rd March. A student-led conference, it is aims to foster the development of the African continent.
This year’s theme “Umuntu Ngumuntu Ngabantu” (Zulu) or “I am because you are” is the first in-person summit post COVID-19. The summit aims to celebrate Africa, promote collaboration, and stimulate positive change by connecting African leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs with a global talent pool.
A diverse lineup of speakers including politicians, bankers, entrepreneurs, activists, and philanthropists will come together. They are all committed to unlocking the true potential of the African continent and include:
- H.E. Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, the First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone who leads on the “Hand Off Our Girls” Initiative to combat sexual and gender-based violence, early marriage, teenage pregnancy, and child trafficking. She also serves on the advisory board of the UN Secretary General’s eminent persons on zero waste.
- Tunde Onakoya, a Nigerian National Chess Master and founder of Chess in Slums Africa. This non-profit organisation impacts over 10,000 lives through tuition-free education, resources, and mentorship. Recognized with accolades such as the Future Awards Africa Prize for Community Action (2021), and the Business Insider Social Entrepreneur of the Year (2022).
- Dr. Fatou Bensouda, High Commissioner of The Gambia and Former Chief Prosecutor at the ICC. She has addressed underreported offences such as sexual and gender-based crimes and the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage. Before her ICC role, she held various high-ranking positions in The Gambia’s legal system and has recieved numberous awards for her contribution to international law and justice.
- Lydia Zigomo, Regional Director for UNFPA East and Southern Africa. She has provided support and technical expertise to over 20 country offices and partners in the region. She has 30 years of experience in women and children’s rights, sexual and reproductive health, HIV, and AIDS among other key issues.
