SPIC MACAY presents Mohiniyattam Performance by Dr. Neena Prasad
Dehradun: Under the banner of SPIC MACAY, the renowned Mohiniyattam dancer and Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, Dr. Neena Prasad, presented a performance for the students of Brooklyn School and Hilton’s School. Accompanied on vocals by Madhavan Nampoothiri, Dr. R Kesavan on Mridangam, and VSK Annadurai on Violin, Dr. Prasad embarked on a journey of artistry and cultural celebration. On day one of her circuit, Dr. Prasad enthralled the students of the Army Public School in Birpur and The Doon Girls’ School.
Dr. Neena’s performance commenced with a graceful rendition of Solkattu, followed by Ganesha Pancha Ratnam. She then depicted the presiding deity Thiruvananthapuram, Padmanabhaswami, traversing in various vahans or vehicles during a vibrant ten-day festival. Set to the evocative Todi raga and Rupaka Tala, the performance exuded an aura of festivity.
During her performance, Dr. Neena Prasad also mesmerized the audience with her rendition of the famous classical song ‘Krishna Nee Begane Baro’. Through the enchanting movements of Mohiniyattam, she depicted the timeless bond between Krishna and his mother, adding a poignant dimension to the evening’s performance.
In an interactive session with the students, Dr. Prasad explained the nuances of communication through Angika, Vachika, Aaharya, and Satvik expressions, shedding light on the profound meanings embedded within each movement.
As the performance drew to a close, a question-answer round followed, wherein students sought insights into the intricate costumes, rich mythological narratives, and distinctive features of Mohiniyattam that set it apart from other classical dance forms.
Reflecting on the significance of Indian classical dance forms, Dr. Neena Prasad said, “Indian Classical dance forms have earned global appeal, and Mohiniyattam is no exception. This female dance form has overcome gender issues and addresses modern themes like women’s empowerment to keep the new audience interested.”
One of the students expressed, “Dr. Neena Prasad’s performance was like a journey through time and culture. It made me realize the depth and beauty of our heritage, and how art can transcend boundaries.”
Dr. Neena Prasad’s career as a Mohiniyattam dancer is a testament to her multifaceted talents. Trained in Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathakali, she is a protégé of renowned gurus such as Kalamandalam Sugandhi and Padamsri Kalamandalam Kshemavathy. Her relentless pursuit of artistic excellence, coupled with her innovative approach to storytelling, has positioned her as a trailblazer in the realm of Indian classical dance.
