Flinders University Announces Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship Empowering Students with Disabilities
Flinders University is proud to announce a partnership with the Dylan Alcott Foundation to launch a scholarship to support a student with disability with their study costs.
With a total donation of up to $30,000, the Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship will provide $10,000 per year towards a student’s tuition fees, with the University providing a one-off payment of $5,000 to support their study or living costs.
The scholarship is available to an undergraduate student aged under 26, living with a disability and registered with an access plan at Flinders University.
Established by the 2022 Australian of the Year, tennis Paralympian and Golden Slam winner Dylan Alcott, the Foundation’s mission is to remove barriers and provide equal opportunities for young Australians living with disability so that they can fulfil their potential and achieve their dreams.
“Believe it or not, I don’t wake up each day to win gold medals or grand slams. My purpose is to change perceptions so people with disability can live their life, just like everyone else,” says Dylan.
“At the foundation, we have been fortunate enough to work on some incredible projects that we hope will have lifelong change for our community.”
Dylan says he hopes the scholarship will allow the student to feel empowered to achieve, with no boundaries or restrictions.
“Having financial support offers more freedom to socialise and make friends, build networks and embrace university life, which will set the student up for success, whatever that looks like for them,” says Dylan.
“When I went to school and visited a career counsellor, uni opportunities weren’t something that were encouraged or suggested for me. This wasn’t because I couldn’t get the marks but because there was a lack of knowledge or expectation of what I could do; could I get to uni? Could I get into classrooms? etc.
“Supporting students to go to a university like Flinders is important to the Dylan Alcott Foundation, so that we can break down barriers and misconceptions, and enable equal opportunities to study and further education.
“We look forward to meeting the scholarship recipient and finding out how we contributed to achieving their dreams in further education.”
