Yangzhou’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Showcased at Nanjing University’s 122nd Anniversary Celebration

Liu Xudong, first-level inspector of the Jiangsu Provincial Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Zou Yajun, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Nanjing University, Shen Wenjie, executive deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Yangzhou Municipal Party Committee, Shen Jie, secretary-general of the Jiangsu Provincial Young Artists Association, and heads of Nanjing University Art School, Xinsheng College and other units attended Activity. The performance is hosted by Jiangsu Young Artists Association, Nanjing University Freshman College, Nanjing University School of Arts, and hosted by Yangzhou Shaoyao Yuanzi Literature and Art Club.
The famous performer Wei Yang opened the show with a flute solo “Singing Yangzhou in the Smoke and Rain”. The melodious sound of the flute, coupled with the old photos behind it, brought the audience into a picturesque Yangzhou with hazy mist and rain. Yangzhou Qingqu is one of the first national intangible cultural heritages with a history of more than 600 years. Its performance form is mainly seated singing. Ms. Shen Yuhong, a famous Yangzhou Qing opera performing artist, used the Yangzhou dialect as a carrier to narrate the gentleness and romance of Yangzhou through her delicate singing and vivid performances, and showcased her songs “Yangzhou Moon” and “Slow Voice”. Vice Chairman of the Provincial Youth Association, the fifth generation descendant of the Wang School of Water Margin, winner of the 9th Peony Award, the highest award for Chinese folk art, and aesthetic education instructor of Nanjing University, Ma Wei brought to the students an excerpt from Yangzhou Pinghua “Wu Song Fights the Tiger” and superb ventriloquism The performances, humorous language arts and strong local characteristics won the audience applause.
As a national intangible cultural heritage protection project and one of the “three major puppets in China”, Yangzhou stick puppets occupy an important position in Chinese puppet art. Teacher Wu Jinfeng, a stick-head puppet performing artist from Yangzhou and a national first-class actor, used puppets to paint, imitating Zheng Banqiao’s brushwork. The puppet fairy in the hands of teacher Xia Lianxun danced with it and interacted with it on stage, which aroused the audience’s surprise and admiration.
The host of Peony Garden, Dai Jie, held two rounds of question and answer sessions. The students enthusiastically answered the questions and received small gifts such as special postcards, lacquer fans, and puppet paintings. The host Dai Jie also invited the students on stage to try on costumes, play roles, and learn action. Finally, the Shaoyaoyuan People’s Band brought the traditional Yangzhou Qingqu ensemble “Flower Tune”, “Ten Cups of Wine” and “Dressing Table” to the audience. All the musicians played in unison, the orchestra harmonized, and the whole performance ended perfectly.
This intangible cultural heritage performance event allows NTU students to enhance communication and understanding with the inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, allowing more NTU students to understand the ancient city of Yangzhou and the intangible cultural heritage of Yangzhou.
