Nanjing University Hosts Fifth Forum on Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era

On May 25, the Fifth Forum on Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era was held at Nanjing University. Xu Ying, member of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee and Minister of the Provincial Party Committee Propaganda Department, and Tan Zhemin, President of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches.

The opening ceremony was hosted by Hong Yinxing, former Party Secretary of Nanjing University and Director of the National Research Center for Political Economy with Chinese Characteristics.

Xu Ying pointed out that General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important exposition on new productivity has profoundly answered the major questions of what new productivity is, why we should develop new productivity, and how to develop new productivity. It has developed Marxist productivity theory, enriched Xi Jinping’s economic thought, and provided new productivity theoretical guidance for promoting high-quality development. Xu Ying emphasized that we must grasp the correct direction, adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, especially Xi Jinping’s economic thought, lead and promote the construction of China’s independent economic knowledge system, and ensure that the direction is correct and the orientation is clear. We must strengthen our sense of independence, adhere to combining the basic principles of Marxism with China’s specific reality and with China’s excellent traditional culture, refine iconic concepts, open up new concepts, new categories, and new expressions that integrate China and foreign countries, and realize the revolution of Chinese economic terminology. We must adhere to the concept of system, pay attention to overall planning, summarize practical experience in a timely manner, and be good at absorbing existing achievements, do more integration and assembly, do more independent innovation and comprehensive innovation, and strive to interpret a series of major issues in Chinese economics from multiple disciplines and dimensions, and create a systematic and academic economic theory. Xu Ying said that Jiangsu has the confidence, conditions, and confidence to implement the important instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping and promote high-quality development. Jiangsu’s vivid practice of accelerating the development of new productivity in accordance with local conditions has provided rich cases for deepening the study of Xi Jinping’s economic thoughts and building an independent knowledge system of Chinese economics. We hope that experts and scholars will visit Jiangsu more often, feel the fiery picture of Jiangsu’s new practice of Chinese-style modernization, and provide more valuable suggestions and good advice for Jiangsu’s development.

Tan Zhemin pointed out that the political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics is the result of the academicization of Xi Jinping’s economic thought, and is the Marxist political economy of the 21st century, which provides the ideological and theoretical foundation for all disciplines of Chinese economics. In the new stage of development, it is a major theoretical and practical problem that must be solved in the new era to promote the high-quality development of my country to deeply understand the true power of Xi Jinping’s economic thought, continue to deepen the research and interpretation of the political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and clarify the era path of developing new quality productivity. It is also the common responsibility and responsibility of the Chinese academic community. Nanjing University has always attached great importance to academic research in the field of political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Especially since the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Nanjing University has thoroughly implemented the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important reply, accelerated the systematic research and academic interpretation of the party’s innovative theory in the new era, and strived to set an example in strengthening cultural confidence and telling the Chinese story well. Tan Zhemin said that the establishment of the Forum on Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in the New Era is another important measure for Nanjing University to promote the study of Xi Jinping’s economic thought. After the opening ceremony, the award ceremony of the second “People’s Educator Wei Xinghua Economics . Huang Guitian, President of Shanxi University, presided over the award ceremony and read the award speech; Professor Wu Yifeng of Renmin University of China and Professor Wu Xuangong of Xiamen University were awarded the second People’s Educator Wei Xinghua Economics Education Award; Hong Yinxing and Liu Wei, former President of Renmin University of China, presented honorary certificates to the winners.

In his keynote speech, Hong Yinxing pointed out that the concept of new productivity and its theory are the preservation and innovation of Marxist productivity and production relations theory. It is necessary to take new productivity as the starting point to build China’s independent economic knowledge system. Liu Wei pointed out that it is necessary to adapt to the requirements of developing new productivity and provide strong impetus and institutional guarantee for the realization of Chinese modernization through deep-level reform. Pang Jinju, former vice president of Nankai University, pointed out that it is necessary to further deepen reform in an all-round way to provide institutional guarantee for vigorously developing new productivity and promoting Chinese modernization. Yang Ruilong, former dean of the School of Economics of Renmin University of China, pointed out that Chinese economics should focus on the two research areas of compatibility between public ownership (state-owned enterprises) and market economy and the correct handling of the relationship between government and market.

Also participating in the forum were experts and scholars from the seven national research centers for political economy with Chinese characteristics approved by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, as well as heads of relevant departments, institutes and schools of Nanjing University.

It is reported that the “Forum on Political Economy of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” was jointly initiated by seven national research centers for political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics approved by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee in March 2017. The forum has always been committed to continuously enriching and developing political economy of socialism with Chinese characteristics based on the land of China, and building a discipline system, academic system, and discourse system of political economy with Chinese characteristics, Chinese style, and Chinese style. The theme of this forum is “New Quality Productivity and the Construction of China’s Independent Knowledge System of Economics”. The forum received a total of 287 papers. After anonymous review by experts, 61 papers were selected for selection, which produced fruitful research results. The forum held thematic discussions on the construction of China’s independent knowledge system of economics, the research on new quality productivity and high-quality development, and the research on the development of socialist economy with Chinese characteristics. This forum promoted academic exchanges among political economy scholars, effectively promoted the innovation of theories and methods of Chinese political economy, provided theoretical guidance and intellectual support for the new practice and exploration of the development of new quality productivity, and made due contributions to the construction of China’s independent knowledge system of economics.
