Nanjing University Successfully Hosts 27th Basic Disciplines Forum Award Ceremony
On May 19, 2024, the award ceremony of the 27th Basic Disciplines Forum of Nanjing University, hosted by Kuang Yaming College, was held in the Guosheng Lecture Hall of Pan Qi Building. Zhou Jilin, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Nanjing University, director of the Graduate Affairs Department of the Party Committee, and executive vice president of the Graduate School, and Yuan Junying, academician of the American Academy of Sciences, academician of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the ceremony.
In his speech, Zhou Jilin, on behalf of the university, paid high tribute to the teachers and students who participated in the forum and worked hard. He pointed out that Nanjing University has always adhered to the educational concept of “establishing morality and cultivating people, serving the country”, taking the road of educating people in “serving the country and serving the people”, and proposed the “Nanjing University Plan” and made “Nanjing University Contributions” to cultivate high-level top-notch innovative talents. This year marks the second anniversary of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s reply to the young scholars who returned from studying abroad in our school. The school takes the in-depth implementation of the “Forging Ahead Action” as a starting point to deepen the construction of the top-notch innovative talent system. He said that Kuang Yaming College is the vanguard and experimental field for the cultivation of top-notch talents in basic disciplines at Nanjing University. Based on the new era and new requirements such as the integration of education and education, and the cross-disciplinary, it continues to deepen the integration of science and education and optimize the education model. He hopes that the college will make new and greater contributions to the cultivation of top-notch innovative talents in the face of major national strategies.
The Nanjing University Basic Disciplines Forum has collected a total of 7,534 papers in various disciplines in previous activities. This forum is open to honorary colleges and related departments of brother universities across the country, and a total of 591 academic papers have been collected, covering basic disciplines and interdisciplinary disciplines such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, history, and philosophy. Many academic achievements that emerged in the forum have been published in well-known academic journals at home and abroad, producing extensive academic influence and positive social reputation. Outstanding students from Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Zhejiang University, Sichuan University, Fudan University, Shandong University, Sun Yat-sen University, Hunan University, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Nanjing University of Technology, Zhejiang Normal University, China University of Mining and Technology and other institutions participated in this forum. Through academic salons, academician lectures and other forms, the forum has built a platform for academic exchanges and inter-school exchanges.
After review by the members of the forum review committee, 159 award-winning papers were selected. Among them, the freshman track was awarded 11 first prizes, 42 second prizes, and 61 third prizes after “expert review”; the regular track was awarded 17 first prizes, 72 second prizes, and 60 third prizes after “expert review” and “on-site presentation”. Dong Hao, vice president of Kuang Yaming College, read out the expert comments on some outstanding works, and leaders and teachers from participating universities awarded prizes to the winning students.
Wang Jun, Executive Vice Dean of Nanjing University Undergraduate School, Executive Dean of Freshman College, and Dean of Kuang Yaming College, thanked all teachers and students for their support and participation in the Basic Disciplines Forum in his summary. He hoped that students would enjoy the process of participating in the competition, and at the same time learn more knowledge and broaden their horizons. He expected that such forums in the future would inspire students’ academic enthusiasm and innovative spirit, and further promote exchanges and cooperation between academics and students. He wished the next forum a greater success.
Lu Dexin, the teaching director of Kuang Yaming College, Zhou Yuan, the party secretary of Kuang Yaming College, Qiao Weihong, the former party secretary of Kuang Yaming College, Shao Zebin, the dean of Nanjing Normal University’s Intensive Training College, Wu Congxin, the deputy secretary of the Party Branch and the deputy dean of China University of Mining and Technology Sun Yueqi College, Lu Li, the deputy director of the Research and Work Department of Sichuan University, and 200 teachers and students from Zhejiang University Zhu Kezhen College, Shanghai Jiaotong University Zhiyuan College, Sichuan University Wu Yuzhang College, Nanjing Normal University Intensive Training College, China University of Mining and Technology Sun Yueqi College, Zhejiang Normal University Chuyang College and Kuang Yaming College attended the event. The award ceremony was hosted by Yu Ziqi, a 2023 undergraduate student of Kuang Yaming College.
Using this year’s Basic Disciplines Forum as a vehicle, the Kuang Yaming College held the “Little Blue Whale Academic Week” event, aiming to enrich the connotation of the “Excellent Talent Honor Cultivation Program” and build an academic exchange platform for teachers and students from all disciplines of the school. During the week-long event from May 13 to 20, the college held a scientific research mentor appointment ceremony, invited Zhang Donghui, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, to give an academic report entitled “First Principles Research on Bulk Water Structure – Opportunities and Challenges Brought by Machine Learning”, and invited Yuan Junying, an academician of the American Academy of Sciences, to give an academic report entitled “Three Visits to the Scientific Research No Man’s Land, Exploring the Secrets of Cell Death”. Students from all disciplines of the school participated in the master lectures and had close exchanges with scientific research mentors to stimulate scientific research potential and cultivate innovative spirit.
