Tsinghua University Recognizes Associate Professor Jin Jun with Fifth “Wang Bugao General Education Award”
Tsinghua News Network, June 7 (student correspondent Liu Han ) On the afternoon of June 5, the award ceremony for the 5th Tsinghua University “Wang Bugao General Education Award” was held in the Sixth Teaching Building. Jin Jun, a tenured associate professor of the Department of Sociology of the School of Social Sciences, won the award. Peng Gang, vice president and provost of Tsinghua University, presented the award to Jin Jun and delivered a speech.
Peng Gang said that Professor Wang Bugao’s eight years of teaching at Tsinghua left unforgettable and profound memories for many Tsinghua teachers and students, and left a strong and colorful mark in the development of Tsinghua University’s general education. The courses taught by Teacher Jin Jun were selected as the school’s general honor courses and benchmark courses because he truly loves students and has long been concentrating on polishing his courses, striving to make every course and every class worthwhile for students, and eagerly looking forward to expanding students’ knowledge and ability improvement space, so that they can move towards a more sound personality and a fuller spiritual world.
Hu Xianzhang, former deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Tsinghua University and former director of the National College Students’ Cultural Quality Education Base, said that Professor Wang Bugao was a role model for students in learning, working and being a person. His influence is still deeply rooted in Tsinghua University, inspiring many teachers to promote the all-round development of students through the classroom.
Pang Haishao, executive vice president and secretary-general of the University Quality Education Research Branch of the China Higher Education Society and researcher at the School of Education of Beijing Institute of Technology, spoke on the theme of “Research on the Path to General Education of Disciplines and Majors” and said that teaching general education courses well requires profound professional skills, and it is very important to make each major become general education for other majors.
Jin Jun thanked the school for awarding him this honor, and gave an academic report titled “Sociological Imagination” focusing on three aspects: teaching challenges, teaching methods, and suggestions for difficulties. He said that sociological imagination is both a way to understand the world and a tool to change the world. As a sociological researcher and teacher, one should “strive to be objective and never be indifferent.”
The award ceremony and academic report were hosted by Professor Wang Wei of the School of Humanities at Tsinghua University. Wang Yiqiu, former executive vice president of Peking University, Li Shuqin, former assistant to the president of Tsinghua University and former executive deputy director of the National College Students Cultural Quality Education Base, Li Mu, professor of the Academy of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University and winner of the 4th “Wang Bugao General Education Award”, and Zhao Lei, a representative of Professor Wang Bugao’s relatives and friends, attended the event.
Jin Jun is a tenured associate professor of the Department of Sociology, School of Social Sciences, Tsinghua University, and vice president of Zhishan Academy. His research areas include environmental protection, public welfare organizations, and grassroots governance. His course “Sociological Imagination: Structure, Power, and Transformation” has been selected as a national first-class undergraduate course, a Beijing quality undergraduate course, a Tsinghua University benchmark course, and a general honors course. He has won the Baosteel Outstanding Teacher Award, the Tsinghua University Gong Yuzhi Teaching Award, and the Tsinghua University Annual Teaching Excellence Award for many consecutive years. He has been selected as Tsinghua University’s sixth, seventh, and eighth “Qingyun Candlelight My Favorite Teacher” in succession.
