University of Houston Welcomes Largest Freshman Class in History for Fall 2024

As the University of Houston welcomes students for fall classes, the campus is buzzing with excitement and energy, fueled by the arrival of its largest freshman class ever. More than 6,200 new freshmen are enrolled for the fall 2024 semester — a class 10% larger than any previously enrolled freshman class at UH.

This growth underscores UH’s rising reputation as a destination for top-tier students seeking a world-class education in a vibrant, urban setting.

“The size of this year’s freshman class is a testament to the growing appeal of our programs. More students are choosing Houston this fall and we are committed to providing them with an exceptional educational experience,” said Diane Z. Chase, senior vice president for academic affairs and provost.

The outlook for a large freshman class began to take shape in the spring when UH received a record number of applications from the Class of 2027. Nearly 33,000 prospective students completed applications.

On the first day of classes new transfer student enrollments were over 4,400, a slight increase over last fall. Master’s, doctoral and special professional programs are expected to remain steady. The first day of term enrollment data is considered preliminary with final headcount confirmed later in the fall.

UH is committed to cultivating a vibrant environment that promotes student success. UH President Renu Khator reached out to students on the first day, highlighting the various on-campus services available to support them. She also encouraged students to fully immerse themselves in campus life by joining student organizations and attending on-campus events.

“A new semester is the perfect time to set new goals and start new adventures. Aim high, study hard and don’t forget to enjoy yourself too. It’s all about balance,” Khator said. “Now that you have joined Houston’s premier university, take full advantage of all that the University has to offer.”
